At approximately 6 A.M. this morning, UCSO deputies were called to a home in the 9300 block of Mallard Circle after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance. As the first deputy arrived, she observed 27-year-old Calvin Glaser standing outside of the home. When Glaser saw the deputy, he fled to a heavily wooded area behind the home, concealed himself, and began firing shots at the deputy. Additional UCSO personnel responded and utilized a brick wall near the home for protective cover as they attempted to identify Glaser’s location in the wood line. Glaser, still from his concealed position, continued to fire shots at deputies striking the brick wall they were utilizing as protective cover numerous times. During the assault, Glaser also fired shots at multiple patrol vehicles approaching the scene, striking one in the front left fender. Deputies did not return fire during this incident based on their inability to clearly identify Glaser’s location in the heavily wooded area and to avoid placing neighboring residents at risk.

After firing approximately 10-12 shots at deputies and their vehicles, Glaser exited the wood line, not holding any weapons in his hands. Glaser was taken into custody by the same deputies he had just tried to injure and/or kill and was transported to a local hospital for a precautionary medical evaluation although he suffered no injuries during this incident.

UCSO Criminal Investigations and Crime Laboratory personnel responded to the scene and learned that in addition to firing shots at deputies, Glaser had also shot into his own home multiple times, which other family members occupied at the time. During the on- scene investigation, UCSO personnel discovered and seized a handgun and two long rifles believed to be used during the assault.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey adds, “The deputies responding to this home had no idea that Glaser would attempt to injure or kill them when they arrived. This suspect, in an act of extreme cowardice, attempted to ambush our personnel who selflessly risk their lives every day to protect and serve our community. I am thankful that these deputies utilized their training while under fire and feel it's extremely important to highlight the restraint that was used when considering whether or not to return fire while not knowing Glaser’s exact location. Most importantly, I am thankful that all the deputies involved in this incident will be able to return to their families this evening safely.”

The investigation into this matter is ongoing at this time and Glaser has been charged with numerous offenses including four counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and one count of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling. Once medically cleared, Glaser will be transported to the Union County Detention Center for processing.
