Sheriff Eddie Cathey is proud to announce that the UCSO will be hosting a total of four Junior Sheriff’s Academies this summer! The Junior Sheriff’s Academy (JSA) introduces students to the world of law enforcement in both classroom and hands-on environments. Topics of instruction for the Academy include but are not limited to traffic stops, Special Response Team functions, K-9 deployment and training, crime scene investigations, and much, much more. We have answered some frequently asked questions below for parents looking to enroll their children in one of our upcoming JSAs. The registration deadline for will be 05/03/2024. If all classes fill up before the deadline, we will notify our community via our social media pages. 

JSA Classes for 2024 Are Now Full!

 Is there a cost to attend the JSA?

No. This is a free program that is hosted and led by deputies within the UCSO’s Community Services Bureau. You must be a Union County resident.

What days will the classes be held and how many hours does the program last each day? 

The JSA will run from 8 A.M.- 1 P.M. Monday through Thursday of each scheduled week. On the Friday morning of each scheduled week, The UCSO will host a graduation ceremony for the Academy students and their families that will run from 9 A.M.-10 A.M.

***During the first morning of each Academy, we encourage parents to arrive between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM to complete all necessary JSA forms. We ask that parents ensure their students arrive on time each day for class to get the most out of their experience.***

The JSA Class dates for 2024 are as follows:

Academy #1: June 17th-21st- ACADEMY IS FULL 

Academy #2: July 15th-19th- ACADEMY IS FULL 

Academy #3: July 22nd-26th- ACADEMY IS FULL 

Academy #4: August 5th-9th- ACADEMY IS FULL

Academy #5: August 12th-16th- ACADEMY IS FULL

How many students will be enrolled in each class?

Each JSA will host approximately 20 students between the ages of 8-12 years old. This ensures we can safely accommodate and provide a great experience for our special guests. Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our online registration form asks that parents indicate which JSA class they would like for their child to attend. Please keep in mind that these classes will fill up quickly and we will do the best we can to accommodate all those interested even if it means offering students the opportunity to attend the JSA at a later/earlier session. You must be a Union County resident to attend JSA. 

What does my child need to bring?

We ask that parents send their child/children with a pre-made lunch for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week. A refrigerator is available for those in need of one. We ask that the lunch drink option be limited to bottled water. Lunch will be provided on Thursdays. No cell phones or electronic devices (including smart watches) are allowed.

What should my child wear?

Students will be issued a t-shirt on the first day of each Academy. Required dress attire will be either a pair of khaki pants or shorts and closed-toed shoes. The student’s issued t-shirt will be worn with the khaki pants/shorts daily. No hoodies

How many children can I register?

The online registration application provides parents with the opportunity to register up to three children. We ask that you only complete registration forms for the children that are in your care to ensure we establish the appropriate emergency contact. If you need to register additional children in your care, please complete a second registration form via our website.

How do I know if my child has been accepted into the JSA?

Parents will receive notification from the UCSO by phone or email letting them know if their child has been accepted into their desired of session of the JSA.
