The Operations Division is supervised by Captain Wes Tyson. It is comprised of the patrol bureau, as well as smaller, specialized units.  Captain Tyson also oversees those deputies assigned to the towns of Lake Park, Marvin, Weddington and Wesley Chapel.

Patrol Bureau

The Patrol Bureau has four geographic zones, each with its own patrol squad and K9 unit, led by a lieutenant and two sergeants. Duties of each squad include 12-hour patrol shifts where officers conduct investigations, serve warrants and processes, and answer calls for service.

Warrant Squad

In the Warrant Squad, a sergeant leads a group of deputies who focus on finding, arresting and processing those who have warrants for arrest, including those who are both residents of Union County or are from other jurisdictions.

Town Contract Deputies

Under a program in place since the 1990s, Town Contract Deputies are contracted from the Sheriff’s Office to perform community-based protection and safety services to specific towns in Union County. Currently, this program is active in Weddington, Lake Park, Wesley Chapel, Marvin and has an especially large and successful presence in the town of Indian Trail.

SAFE Unit

The Sheriff’s Alcohol Field Enforcement (SAFE) Unit is a grant-funded program that was created in 2015 to help keep citizens safe from drunk drivers and to decrease the amount of DWIs. This unit includes a sergeant and four deputies specializing in traffic safety.
