Earlier this evening, 61-year-old Charles Thompson of Charlotte, NC was arrested on the Monroe Expressway at the conclusion of a multi-agency vehicle pursuit which spanned from the City of Monroe into western Union County. Thompson, who was operating a stolen box truck, fled from Monroe Police Department officers during an attempted traffic stop. Thompson was pursued throughout Monroe city and traveled outside of the city through the Wesley Chapel and Weddington areas where UCSO deputies joined the pursuit. Thompson briefly entered Mecklenburg County during his flight attempt but made the decision to return to Union County where he was once again engaged and pursued by officers with the Monroe Police Department and UCSO deputy sheriffs. Thompson entered the Monroe Expressway during the pursuit and UCSO deputies attempted to use a forced vehicle stop technique. As UCSO deputies were moving into position to execute the forced vehicle stop, Thompson used the stolen box truck to strike a UCSO deputies patrol vehicle which caused Thompson to wreck the box truck into a median thus ending the pursuit. Thompson was taken into custody by UCSO deputies and Monroe Police Department officers on scene. Thankfully, no one was injured during this pursuit. Thompson will be processed into the Union County Jail and will be charged by both the Monroe Police Department and the UCSO for his reckless, criminal behavior. The investigation into thisincident is ongoing and the exact charges Thompson will be facing and his conditions of release will be available at a later time. The agencies involved in this pursuit would also like to thank the Stallings Police Department and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for their assistance in this matter.
