Early this morning, Union County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Byrum received the
prestigious C.C. McGee School Resource Officer of the Year award. The award
was presented by the North Carolina Association of School Resource Officers
(NCASRO) during their annual convention in Wilmington. Deputy Byrum was
selected for this award from a vast pool of qualified SRO nominees who are
dedicated to the safety and security of NC’s public schools. Sheriff Eddie Cathey
adds “Deputy Byrum embodies all of the qualities we search for when selecting a
School Resource Officer. Byrum’s dedication to the Sheriff’s Office and his passion
for working within our local schools is evident through his work ethic and
professionalism.”

Earlier this year, Deputy Byrum also received the Union County Public School’s
SRO of the Year award for 2021-2022. Byrum has worked for the Sheriff’s Office
for over 16 ½ years and has served as an SRO for nearly 7 years. The majority of
his SRO service has been at Weddington High School where he is a popular figure
